I normally never write about political events. But last week, Wednesday the 9th of November 2016, something special and extraordinary happened. Because of that I felt an urge to express my thoughts and feelings with you because I felt touched as a woman, and especially as a woman that values connection, compassion, inclusion, collaboration, consciousness and respect.
The evening before the outcome, I went to bed almost in full confidence that Hillary Clinton would be the first female president of the United States of America. It would be a huge historical moment giving many women the trust and confidence that the glass ceiling is broken on that level and women can accomplish everything they dream of. Seeing another women reach for one of the highest positions in power is a great example for women to believe in their dreams and potential.
The outcome turned out to be completely different...
I woke up at 5 and Donald Trump was in the lead as he won Florida and Ohio. It was 95% sure by then that he would win the election. I felt troubled, devastated and uncertain. Because I saw somebody become the next president of the United States with values and behavior that do not resonate with me and besides that, I was disappointed that we could not celebrate the success of a woman's dream to become the 45th President of the United States.
From fear to trust
Two days after the election my feelings and thoughts changed from feeling troubled and anxious to feeling hope and trust again. What changed? What made me go from the fear perspective to the trust perspective. I woke up on Friday morning realizing that I was giving Trump too much credit, too much power. I believed that the world would be a worse place to live in if he would be the President of the United States.
That morning I asked myself: " Is it true?", "Is it really true that the world will be a worse place Trump leading America?, "If I believe that, am I not giving my power of creation and action away?"
Just then it struck me: I became aware that I was giving my power away. I believed for a moment that I had nothing to contribute and thus I was making myself small and powerless. For a moment I stopped believing in my own power of value and contribution.
Becoming aware of that dynamic, I connected with my soulful self that believes that I am the only one that decides to led other people or events influence what I believe, think or feel. I had made real for a moment an event where I reacted with fear and made it my reality.
The moment I connected with my soulful self, I could see from a distance that I was acting from fear. I was in the fear place identifying with triggered fear thoughts and feelings. When I became aware and gave space to the feelings like anxiety and tension I gave it the attention it needed and it ran through my system.
Guided by authentic self
I unidentified myself with these feelings and they integrated in my system not leading my behavior. They were now on sitting on the co-pilot seat. That moment I could come back to a deeper place where I feel trust and serenity, what I call my soulful self. Where I feel relaxed and connected with something bigger then the contracted self.
I see this dynamic of fear and trust like a dance. We breath from trust to fear and back again and slowing down and reflection gives us the possibility to do a check-in within ourselves and then give space to whatever is inside ourselves that asks our attention.
When we are feeling trust there is a sense of relaxation and confidence that everything will be ok. Despite the challenges we are facing there is a sense of purpose and that we do not have to resign to it but have the power of creation and action. Because we let our values and principles guide us from a soulful place.
Going back to the american elections....
Hillary held her concession speech Wednesday afternoon and what she communicated resonated with my soulful self. Despite she did not win the election she had a powerful message to share that I would like to share with you here. It is a direct script from what she said that day:
"And to the young people in particular, I hope you will hear this. I have, as Tim said, spent my entire adult life fighting for what I believe in. I’ve had successes and I’ve had setbacks. Sometimes really painful ones. Many of you are at the beginning of your professional public and political careers. You will have successes and setbacks, too. This loss hurts, but please never stop believing that fighting for what’s right is worth it. And so we need, we need you to keep up these fights now and for the rest of your lives.
And to all the women, and especially the young women, who put their faith in this campaign and in me, I want you to know that nothing has made me prouder than to be your champion. Now, I know we have still not shattered that highest and hardest glass ceiling, but someday someone will and hopefully sooner than we might think right now.
And to all the little girls who are watching this, never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams."
Dream Big, act Big
This message resonates deeply and inspires me to make the world a better place within my influence zone to inspire other woman to live a soulful life and career. To help them realize their dreams, take their longings and wishes serious as it is a calling that asks us to be created in the world.
For Hillary it was to become the President of the United States and with her dream she has impacted many people and especially women. Now do you choose to see that she has failed on her dream? Or do you choose to see by taking her dream seriously she was able to do great things and the story is not over yet. She went for it and something beautiful will come out of this, it is not so much about the result of the dream but taking it serious and act BIG.
I believe that if you would like to make the world a better place, start with yourself and start to take yourself and your dreams serious.
When you feel that somebody in your circle of connections would need to read this post, share it with her. Sometimes a different perspective on things can help to shake us up to reflect on how we react in certain situations.
